Cloudland Canyon State Park: Georgia's Best Kept RV Secret

If you've never camped at Cloudland Canyon, you're missing the best state park in Georgia. That's not a hot take — it's a consensus among people who've been there.

Located in the northwest corner of the state near Trenton, Cloudland Canyon sits on the western edge of Lookout Mountain. The canyon itself drops 1,800 feet, with waterfalls, sandstone walls, and trails that feel more like Tennessee or the Carolinas than anything you'd expect 90 miles from Atlanta.

The Drive from Atlanta

From Atlanta, take I-75 North to I-24 West, then exit at Trenton and follow the signs. The drive is about 90 miles and takes roughly 90 minutes.

From our Cumming location: Take GA-400 North to I-575 North to I-75 North. Add about 20 minutes.

The last stretch of road into the park is hilly and winding. Our Class C motorhomes and travel trailers handle it fine — just take it slow and don't rush the turns.

Camping at Cloudland Canyon

The park has two main campground areas: Backcountry (tent only, hike-in) and Cloudland Canyon Campground with RV-accessible sites.

The RV sites have 30-amp electrical hookups. Water is available at central stations. There are no full-hookup sites, so you'll be using your onboard tanks for water and managing gray/black water until you reach a dump station.

Sites book through Georgia State Parks reservations. Book at least 4–6 weeks out for weekends from March through November. Fall is the most competitive — October weekends can fill within hours of opening.

What to Do

The Waterfalls Trail is the signature hike. It's a 4.8-mile loop that descends into the canyon via 600+ stairs to reach two waterfalls — Cherokee Falls (60 feet) and Hemlock Falls (90 feet). It's strenuous but worth every step. Wear shoes with grip.

The West Rim Loop is 4.9 miles along the canyon rim with continuous views. Less strenuous than the waterfall trail, better for families with kids.

Backcountry camping is available for those who want to hike in and stay overnight. Not relevant if you're in an RV, but worth knowing if you have a mix of campers in your group.

Rock climbing is permitted in designated areas. The sandstone walls draw climbers from across the Southeast.

Practical Notes

• No dump station inside the park. The nearest is in Trenton, about 10 minutes away.
• Cell service is limited inside the canyon. Download offline maps before you go.
• Bring firewood or buy it at the park store — collecting wood is not permitted.
• The park store has basics but is not a grocery run. Stock up before you arrive.
• Leashed pets are allowed on most trails.

Best Time to Go

Fall (October–early November): Peak foliage, peak crowds. Book early or go mid-week.

Spring (March–May): Waterfalls are running strong from winter rain. Wildflowers on the rim. Comfortable temperatures.

Summer: Hot, but the canyon provides shade and the waterfalls are refreshing. Weekdays are significantly less crowded.

Winter: Underrated. The canyon is dramatic with bare trees and occasional frost. Campground is much quieter.

Cloudland Canyon is the kind of place that makes you want to stay an extra night. Plan for at least two.
